Paul Bocken has been involved, together with his father Jan, in Jumping Indoor Maastricht as farrier from the start. Paul lives in Weert with his wife Jenny and four children. Daughter Emma Bocken is a successful international jumper, who won team gold and individual silver at this year’s European Championships for Children. Paul and his wife are equally successful in breeding. The bred, among others, together with Paul’s father, Dana Blue, the top horse of Maikel van der Vleuten. Paul still owns half of the mare.

What is so special about being a farrier?
I am a real horse fan and I am happy I can make a living out of my passion. I love to take care of sport horses together with the team. It keeps my work challenging and pleasant.

What is your connection with the people of JIM?
We have been involved in JIM from the start and we know many of them. You work together for three days and you built up a bond.

How did you become a farrier?
My father (Jan Bocken) is also a farrier, so it was the logical thing to do. When I was you I would accompany him on Saturdays and school holidays. After college I started the farrier training in Deurne and worked together with my father for a few years. Now I am self-employed.

What is your favourite competition during JIM?
That is, without doubt, the Grand Prix on Sunday. It is always exciting and they competitor field is great.

How do you prepare for JIM?
I do not need much preparation. I have a fully equipped van. The first day I settle in the hall near the stables and stay there until Sunday evening.

Do you follow the sport?
Of course. I really like the sport and I find it important and interesting to see how our clients perform at shows.

What makes JIM so unique/special for you?
I live in Limburg and I am very proud that we have such a great show in Maastricht.

Who is your favourite to win this year’s Grand Prix?
It would be great if a rider from Limburg would win. I go for Michel Hendrix.
